Kawatiri (Buller River) – Saturday 13 March

Type: Peer Group Lead / Instruction
Minimum Ability/Grade: White Water 2+
An all-day event – details to be confirmed
  Karen Bruce kazkayaks@gmail.com
Nelson Canoe Club's Summer series of white water paddling is here.

Hopefully, accompanied by sunny days and warm water, which the Nelson and Tasman regions are renowned for at this time of year.

This series of 5 trips (weather, flows, and participant interest permitting) is an excellent opportunity to bolster your paddling skills and experience. Whether you recently completed a beginner's course or are getting back into the white water kayaking after a little time away. These classic Murchison trips will have something for everyone.

This is trip #4

To start this trip, we will revisit the Kawatiri (Buller River) Doctor's Creek run. Then it will be on to the Granity run of the Kawatiri (portaging the main rapid). Portaging the main Granity rapid makes both these trips grade 2+.
The scenic Doctor's Creek run will provide plenty of features to warm up the paddling skills that we have been working on over the white water summer series. The Granity run at summer flows is still graded 2+ while offering a step-up from the previous trips. The main Granity rapid is grade 3+ and will not be part of this instructional trip. However, a path makes this rapid easy to walk, and plenty of action remains. Bouncy waves trains and rock gardens to practice your boat maneuvering provides the excitement on this run. Bring your lunch for this day of summer paddling!

There are limited places available for recent beginner course participants or rusty paddlers to get some instruction on these trips.
A trip may split into an instructional group to support the development of club members and a peer group paddle (subject to numbers, interests, and the ability of participants).
These river runs always have enough water to make for some enjoyable paddling. Whether it's finding a wave to practice surfing on, a cross-current move, or an eddy line for tail stands. These classic runs always deliver. However, if flows allow and other runs are an option the trip may make changes to these planned river-runs, subject to flows on the day.

You will need to complete a registration form for this trip. Please email Karen and she will send you a link for the registration form for trip #4.

Registrations close: 5pm, Wednesday, March 10, 2021 (Registration forms must be completed by this time).

You must make your own gear hire arrangements. Please arrange any gear hire from the club early, at least 2 weeks in advance, as this is the holiday season, and the gear officer may be on holiday at times!

Details of the trip logistics will be sent out 48hrs before the trip to those who have registered. (Last minute enquiries about joining the trip are welcome).
