Nelson Canoe Club's Summer series of white water paddling is here.

Hopefully, accompanied by sunny days and warm water, which the Nelson and Tasman regions are renowned for at this time of year.

This series of 5 trips (weather, flows, and participant interest permitting) is an excellent opportunity to bolster your paddling skills and experience. Whether you recently completed a beginner's course or are getting back into the white water kayaking after a little time away. These classic Murchison trips will have something for everyone.

This is trip #2

It includes a minimum of two runs. One on the Kawatiri (The Buller River) - Doctors Creek Run, and the magnificent middle Matakitaki River run. Both are grade 2+.

Doctors Creek will provide a warm-up run, before moving to the Matakitaki River for a run on the classic middle section. The Matakitaki with its crystal turquoise waters is not to be missed. Just out of Murchison, but tucked away from the road, this is wilderness paddling on your doorstep. The Matakitaki provides endless playing. Surf waves, to friendly tail-standing eddy-lines to practice those whoopee-turns, and a great number of eddies for moves to sharpen the river running skills, it has it all. Set in the Matakitaki gorge, the native bush is brimming with birdlife. The paddling community fought hard to save this river from being dammed, and it's a jewel that should be on any kayaker's bucket list.

There are limited places available for recent beginner course participants or rusty paddlers to get some instruction on these trips.
A trip may split into an instructional group to support the development of club members and a peer group paddle (subject to numbers, interests, and the ability of participants).
These river runs always have enough water to make for some enjoyable paddling. Whether it's finding a wave to practice surfing on, a cross-current move, or an eddy line for tail stands. These classic runs always deliver. However, if flows allow and other runs are an option the trip may make changes to these planned river-runs subject to flows on the day. Bring your lunch for this great day out!
