Gear Rental
The club currently owns a fleet of 16 whitewater river kayaks and 8 sea kayaks together with lifejackets, helmets, paddles and safety gear, as well as a fitted-out canoe trailer. These are used for instruction courses, club trips and are also hired out to members and selected groups. The equipment is hired out to members at nominal rates to cover maintenance and replacement costs, and the trailer and fleet are often hired at a bulk rate during the week by schools for school camps.
Canoe hire is accessed through the club's cell-phone (027 247 4200), or email gearhire@nelsonkayakers.co.nz and requires a minimum of 24 hours notice. Please phone and leave a message. Please speak very clearly - the garbling of phone numbers is a particular problem. Please report all damage. Ring before 8pm.
The club is currently storing its fleet in two containers on the Akersten St reclamation near the Nelson Marina on land rented from the Nelson City Council.

HIREAGE RATES
River Kayaks:
Members: $15/day.
Non Members: $30/day.
Sea Kayaks:
Members: $20 kayak/day (double kayaks: ADD $10 per day).
Non Members: $40 kayak/day (double kayaks: ADD $20 per day).
Gear (paddle, sprayskirt, PFD, helmet):
Members: $10 for duration of hire.
Non Members: $20 for duration of hire.
Extra helmets, life jackets and paddles can be hired at $5 per item.
Trailer:
Members: $10/day.
Non Members: $40/day.
- Current membership required to hire all gear.
- Non members must have a member responsible for the hire.
- Students / Unwaged Members half price rates.
- Flares are available when hiring sea kayaks and throw bags for white water trips.
- Flares are no longer kept in the container but must be collected from the committee member looking after hireage. $20 returnable deposit is needed as so many are being not returned.
CONDITIONS OF HIRE:
The Hirer accepts that use of the hired gear is AT THEIR OWN RISK and THE CLUB HAS NO LIABILITY for loss or personal injury.
The Hirer accepts that any damage to or loss of hired gear beyond insurance reimbursement may be charged to the HIRER.
Take only the canoe and matching spray‑deck as arranged!!
- Unless informed that they are not required, gear (paddle, PFD, spray deck, helmet) will be hired with each canoe booking, at the rates shown above.
- For the safety of the next hirer, PLEASE advise Hire phone immediately of any damaged or missing items or gear!!!
- KEY to be returned to Deposit box at compound with equipment on day arranged.
- Late return of canoes, key and gear will be charged for the late period at hireage rates.
- Cancelled or non use of hired gear must be advised immediately. Refunds are NOT automatic.
- Refunds may be given if Hire phone advised by 8.30 of first day of arranged hire and if key/canoes/gear returned.
- Rinse seawater and dirt etc. off ALL gear before storing in correct area of shed. (Tap at boat ramp at marina)
- HANG UP gear to dry in correct area in shed. LEAVE hatches off Sea kayaks.
- Please make all cheques payable to NELSON CANOE CLUB. Leave payment at key pick‑up point in envelope.
